Feedback from practice

Written feedback from my practice assessors and supervisors at the end of each placement (practice learning experience, PLE), recorded in my ePAD.

PLE 6Theatres

Luke has spent 5 weeks within the theatre department working with myself and colleagues. He has been able to improve his ANTT technique, he has learned how to scrub up, and to distinguish between some of the more popular instruments. He has been able to experience days in different disciplines, including children's and trauma.

PLE 5Day surgery

We have tried to fulfil as many of Luke's objectives as possible within our scope as day surgery nurses. Luke has had experience of following a patient through from admission to surgery to recovery and discharge. Luke has been responsible for handing patients over if we have overnight stays. Luke has also gained an insight into what medications are used during and after surgery, such as pain management and antibiotics, and is able to distinguish different types of medications.

Luke has been a pleasure to work with, always punctual, professional and enthusiastic to learn. Luke has good communication skills and is able to converse well with patients, staff and doctors. He has been praised by other members of the team for stepping forward, taking responsibility for a surgical list when numbers were short, with direct supervision. Luke enjoyed this very much and found this built on the skills he had been developing over the weeks.

Luke is always polite to the patients and has an empathetic nature. It has been a pleasure to work with him and I wish him the best for his future.

PLE 4Cardiac care

I can see that he is hardworking and shows interest in gaining more knowledge and experience. He can be proactive and has completed relevant spokes in terms of Cath Lab, Pacing theatre and Cardiac Rehab. He has identified future learning and development … He has a great rapport with patients from what I've observed, and I hope he does well going forward into year 2.

PLE 3Spinal surgical ward

Since Luke has started placement on [the ward], Luke has taken every opportunity to embrace new learning opportunities, skills and knowledge. Luke is always punctual, polite and hard working. Observation of Luke in the clinical setting, he is a role model for other students.

PLE 2Community nursing

Over the last 8 weeks Luke has grown in confidence. He has carried out a number of practical skills independently and has been involved daily with catheter care, changing leg bags and basic wound care. He has administered both intramuscular and subcutaneous injections and has participated in the running of wound clinics, where he has taken a hands-on approach with supervision. Over the past few weeks, he has gained a good knowledge of wound care, the assessment of wounds and suitable dressing types.

During the placement Luke undertook [electronic records system] training and is now competent with using the online documentation tool. He has been completing all aspects of documentation (nursing assessments, risk assessments and developing individual care plans) to a high standard with minimal supervision. He has participated in handover and delivers information accurately and clearly with minimal prompting.

As we come to the end of the placement, Luke has shown he possesses a caring attitude, and has done throughout the placement. He has proven to have good communication skills and is able to put patients and families at ease. He has become a well-liked and popular member of the team and fitted in well, with all staff feeding back how keen to learn he is and a joy to work with. He works within his own limitations and will ask for help or guidance when he is unsure.

He has always been punctual and adhered to uniform policy. I wish him all the best as he moves on to his next placement.

PLE 1Respiratory ward

Luke has demonstrated adequate knowledge and skills in patient care by applying appropriate nursing approaches. He has excellent communication skills, he is polite and compassionate with patients. Had good feedback from his Practice Supervisor and all the members of the team.
